One of my favorite places...
In this age of coffee-obsession, every indie person must have their favorite non-starbucks stomping ground. Of course, mine also serves beer.
I really love JJs Market and Cafe on Broadway (next to Noshville). I've been going there since my freshman year of college; it was introduced to me by a native nashvillian who also introduced me to belle & sebastian; do i even need to tell you that i was in love with this boy?! JJs has this relaxed yet intellectual vibe that I love; it's pretty quiet, so reading or working on school stuff is very possible, but there are still hushed conversations going on if you want to be social. They have a great selection of bottled beer in the market part, and many ppl just sit working on their laptops sipping a Rogue Ale, or read Rilke while enjoying a coffee (by the way, I also think their coffee is the best in town). It's this cozy, relatively long room with really high ceilings and nice tables, chairs and old furniture; there's always either jazz or classical music on. It's a very calming place for me, and by far one of the places i would miss most if i ever left nashville. I went earlier tonight when i got off work and had a latte, listened to a recent mix i made for a friend (i have this backwards-ass method of mix tape making: i make a mix on my ipod then run the ipod through my receiver and tape it that way; technologically backtracking!), read a magazine, and felt so much better. Now I'm ready to tackle the awaiting army of dirty dishes and strewn clothing that are encamped in my apartment, ready to take it over any day.
(In an aside: I don't think either of them will ever read this, but congrats to Angus and Molly, JJs regular and friends I met through aforementioned freshman year dream boy - they got married this past weekend!)
(note: my favorite coffee place ever is called cafe intermezzo in atlanta. different vibe (it's a bar and restaurant as well), but wonderful: feels like an 18th century salon. beautiful half-rounded ceilings and several different rooms, a nice patio out back, and a huge huge drink menu of everything from coffee drinks to wine to various libations. i miss that place!)
